Hydra, in a day
Some places never go out of style. Hydra is one of them.
Elegant, effortlessly cinematic and long associated with artists, creatives and travellers in search of something a little different, the island has always moved to its own rhythm. No cars, no traffic, no need to rush. In Autumn, that rhythm becomes even more inviting. The summer crowds begin to fade, the light turns golden, and the harbour, cobbled lanes and stone-built houses set the scene for a day spent wandering without a plan. Stop for a coffee, linger over lunch by the sea or, if the weather is on your side, take a swim before heading back.
THE SEA IS STILL CALLING
And yes, you can still swim.
On a warm, sunny day, Hydra’s deep blue waters are hard to resist. And there’s no need to venture far from the harbour to find your spot by the sea. Spilia, Hydroneta and Avlaki are all within walking distance, each offering its own way to enjoy the water.
So, bring your swimsuit. Just in case.
THE GOLDEN SUN. SAY HELLO TO APOLLO
Hydra’s creative spirit is as much a part of its identity as its waterfront and stone mansions. One of its most striking landmarks is Apollo Wind Spinner, Jeff Koons’ monumental golden sculpture, inspired by Apollo and installed overlooking the harbour. Catching the light and moving with the wind, it offers a contemporary contrast to the island’s timeless setting.
REMEMBER BOY ON A DOLPHIN?
Long before Hydra became a favourite among today’s travellers, the island was already making its mark on the international stage. The 1957 film Boy on a Dolphin, starring Sophia Loren, was filmed partly on Hydra, bringing the island’s distinctive beauty to audiences around the world and adding a memorable chapter to its cinematic history.
TAKE A LITTLE SOMETHING WITH YOU
A box of Hydra’s traditional almond sweets. A postcard picked up along the way. A small piece of local craftsmanship. Or simply the memory of a day that felt like a proper escape.
Take the morning ferry, discover the island and be back to the city by afternoon.
